It forms the title of scriptures in both Pali and Sanskrit that describe the events around his passing away: <em>Mah\u0101-paribb\u0101na-sutta<\/em> and <em>Mah\u0101-parinirv\u0101\u1e47a-s\u016btra<\/em> (different from the <em>Mah\u0101y\u0101na Mah\u0101-parinirv\u0101\u1e47a-s\u016btra<\/em>). He is regarded as having achieved nirv\u0101\u1e47a under the bodhi-tree many years before his passing away. For the many years that he taught after achieving enlightenment (bodhi) or nirv\u0101\u1e47a, it could not be said that he had entered full or complete nirv\u0101\u1e47a. So two kinds of nirv\u0101\u1e47a were distinguished in the Buddhist texts: sopadhi-\u015be\u1e63a-nirv\u0101\u1e47a, nirv\u0101\u1e47a with the remainder (\u015be\u1e63a) of the personal existence (upadhi), and anupadhi-\u015be\u1e63a-nirv\u0101\u1e47a or nirupadhi-\u015be\u1e63a-nirv\u0101\u1e47a, nirv\u0101\u1e47a without the remainder of the personal existence or body. The latter is what is called parinirv\u0101\u1e47a, the full or complete nirv\u0101\u1e47a that can only occur when the body passes away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Grammatical note: The prefix pari, here meaning full or complete, was added to nirv\u0101\u1e47a to make this distinction. The word is not para-nirv\u0101\u1e47a. Even if it was, it could not mean beyond nirv\u0101\u1e47a, as sometimes understood in Theosophical writings.
