Other \u201cmodes of birth\u201d mentioned in the VP are mind-born, will-born and self-born.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Mind-born<\/strong> is used only in connection with the sons of Brahma, the seven rishis, or prajapatis. In VP 1.7.4 they are called literally \u201cmind sons\u201d or m\u0101nas\u0101\u1e25 putr\u0101\u1e25. This term is translated (correctly) by H.H. Wilson as mind-born sons. HPB uses the term <em>Manasaputras<\/em>, and explains it as those who are \u201cborn of \u2018Mahat\u2019, or Brahm\u00e2\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theosociety.org\/pasadena\/sd\/sd2-1-08.htm\">SD II, 167<\/a>), or Mind-born sons (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theosociety.org\/pasadena\/sd\/sd2-1-21.htm\">SD II, 374<\/a>).\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 3em\">\nyad\u0101sya t\u0101\u1e25 praj\u0101\u1e25 sarv\u0101 na vyavardhanta dh\u012bmata\u1e25 |<br \/>\nath\u0101ny\u0101nm\u0101nas\u0101nputr\u0101nsad\u1e5b\u015b\u0101n\u0101tmano &#8216;s\u1e5bjat || <a href=\"http:\/\/fiindolo.sub.uni-goettingen.de\/gret_utf.htm#VisnuP\">VP 1.7.4<\/a>||\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Will-born<\/strong> is used in the same sense as mind-born, in connection with the rishis.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Self-born<\/strong> is used for example in connection with Vishnu and his hypostases. The element of apparition is not the essential characteristic here, but the idea of parentlessness, the idea that something appears from nothing other than itself, that is self-born.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nHPB also uses self-born in the sense of parentless, for example in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theosociety.org\/pasadena\/sd\/sd1-1-06.htm\">SD I, 109<\/a>: \u201cThey [the Manushi-Buddhas] are the \u2018Buddhas of Contemplation,\u2019 and are all Anupadaka (parentless), i.e., self-born of divine essence.\u201d Anupadaka would be erroneous for upap\u0101duka, which is an adjective meaning self-produced, often used in the context of the modes of birth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the Vishnu Purana (Vi\u1e63\u1e47u P\u016bra\u1e47a, VP) we find the term self-born.
