In an account of the sinking of Atlantis, taken from a secret commentary and given by H. P. Blavatsky in The Secret Doctrine<\/em>, a kind of robot is mentioned (S.D. vol. 2, pp. 427-428). It is there called a \u201cspeaking animal\u201d or \u201cspeaking beast.\u201d In a footnote Blavatsky reports that, according to the accounts, these were artificially-made beasts, mechanical animals that were informed by elementals.<\/p>\n

In another footnote Blavatsky reports that, according to Brahmachari Bawa, extensive Sanskrit treatises on such subjects once existed but are now lost. There is an existing Pali text, Loka-pa\u00f1\u00f1atti<\/em>, \u201cDescription of the World,\u201d that is largely based on lost Sanskrit texts.1<\/sup> It refers to such a robot, in the words bh\u016bta-v\u0101hana-yanta<\/em> (Sanskrit, bh\u016bta-v\u0101hana-yantra<\/em>), literally, \u201celemental vehicle machine.\u201d The word bh\u016bta<\/em> means both an \u201celement,\u201d as in the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and ether), and a \u201cspirit,\u201d as in nature spirits. Hence, it is what is called in Theosophical and related writings an elemental. The phrase means a machine that is the vehicle of an elemental. These elemental-driven machines in the account given in the Loka-pa\u00f1\u00f1atti<\/em> are used to protect the relics of the Buddha.<\/p>\n

According to the Loka-pa\u00f1\u00f1atti<\/em>, the secret of the construction of these elemental-driven robots is kept in the place \u201croma\u201d (roma-visaya<\/em>). Modern scholars have assumed that this refers to Rome.2<\/sup> However, romaka-pura<\/em> (\u201ctown of the romakas\u201d) is said in Sanskrit astronomical texts to be the home of the ancient astronomer Asura Maya, and T. Subba Row wrote that: \u201cIn the opinion of the Brahmans he was an \u2018Atlantean\u2019 and one of the greatest astronomers and occultists of the lost Atlantis\u201d (Blavatsky Collected Writings<\/em>, vol. 5, p. 236). Blavatsky wrote that the name romaka-pura<\/em> \u201cis an allusion to the land and cradle of the \u2018Sweat-born\u2019 of the Third Race\u201d (S.D. 2.67), being suggestive of the humanity \u201cborn from the pores of their parents\u201d (S.D. 2.68). She explains that roma-k\u016bpas<\/em> means \u201chair-pores\u201d in Sanskrit. She goes on to say that \u201cthese are references to the later Second and the Earlier Third Root Races.\u201d Even though these races are actually pre-Atlantean, the name romaka-pura<\/em> was apparently adopted to refer to Atlantis, \u201csince it was part and parcel of the last continent of Atlantis\u201d (S.D. 2.50).<\/p>\n

Here is the story of the doom of Atlantis from The Secret Doctrine<\/em>, vol. 2, pp. 426-428:<\/p>\n

\u201cFor here is a fragment of the earlier story from the Commentary: \u2014<\/p>\n

. . . \u201cAnd the<\/em> \u2018great King of the dazzling Face<\/em>,\u2019 the chief of all the Yellow-faced<\/em>, was sad<\/em>, seeing the sins of the Black-faced.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHe sent his air-vehicles<\/em> (Viman) to all his brother-chiefs<\/em> (chiefs of other nations and tribes) with pious men within<\/em>, saying:<\/em> \u2018Prepare. Arise ye men of the good law<\/em>, and cross the land while<\/em> (yet) dry.<\/em>\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018The Lords of the storm are approaching. Their chariots are nearing the land. One night and two days only shall the Lords of the Dark Face<\/em> (the Sorcerers) live on this patient land. She is doomed<\/em>, and they have to descend with her. The nether Lords of the Fires<\/em> (the Gnomes and fire Elementals) are preparing their magic Agneyastra<\/em> (fire-weapons worked by magic). But the Lords of the Dark Eye<\/em> (\u201cEvil Eye\u201d) are stronger than they<\/em> (the Elementals) and they are the slaves of the mighty ones. They are versed in Ashtar<\/em> (Vidya, the highest magical knowledge).* Come and use yours<\/em> (i.e., your magic powers, in order to counteract those of the Sorcerers). Let every lord of the Dazzling Face<\/em> (an adept of the White Magic) cause the Viman of every lord of the Dark Face to come into his hands<\/em> (or possession), lest any<\/em> (of the Sorcerers) should by its means escape from the waters<\/em>, avoid the rod of the Four<\/em>, (Karmic deities) and save his wicked<\/em>\u2019 (followers, or people).<\/p>\n

\u2018May every yellow face send sleep from himself<\/em> (mesmerize?) to every black face. May even they<\/em> (the Sorcerers) avoid pain and suffering. May every man true to the Solar Gods bind<\/em> (paralyze) every man under the lunar gods<\/em>, lest he should suffer or escape his destiny.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2018And may every yellow face offer of his life-water<\/em> (blood) to the speaking animal of a black face<\/em>, lest he awaken his master.<\/em>\u2020<\/p>\n

\u2018The hour has struck<\/em>, the black night is ready<\/em>, etc.<\/em>, etc.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2018Let their destiny be accomplished. We are the servants of the great Four.<\/em>\u2021 May the Kings of light return.<\/em>\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe great King fell upon his dazzling Face and wept<\/em>. . . .<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the Kings assembled the waters had already moved<\/em>. . . .<\/p>\n

\u201c(But) the nations had now crossed the dry lands. They were beyond the water mark. Their Kings reached them in their Vimans<\/em>, and led them on to the lands of Fire and Metal<\/em> (East and North).\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, in another passage, it is said: \u2014<\/p>\n

\u201c . . . . Stars<\/em> (meteors) showered on the lands of the black Faces; but they slept.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe speaking beasts<\/em> (the magic watchers) kept quiet.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe nether lords waited for orders<\/em>, but they came not<\/em>, for their masters slept.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe waters arose<\/em>, and covered the valleys from one end of the Earth to the other. High lands remained<\/em>, the bottom of the Earth<\/em> (the lands of the antipodes) remained dry. There dwelt those who escaped; the men of the yellow-faces and of the straight eye<\/em> (the frank and sincere people).<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the Lords of the Dark Faces awoke and bethought themselves of their Vimans in order to escape from the rising waters<\/em>, they found them gone.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Then a passage shows some of the more powerful magicians of the \u201cDark Face\u201d \u2014 who awoke earlier than the others \u2014 pursuing those who had \u201cspoilt them\u201d and who were in the rear-guard, for \u2014 \u201cthe nations that were led away<\/em>, were as thick as the stars of the milky way<\/em>,\u201d says a more modern Commentary, written in Sanskrit only.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike as a dragon-snake uncoils slowly its body<\/em>, so the Sons of men<\/em>, led on by the Sons of Wisdom<\/em>, opened their folds<\/em>, and spreading out<\/em>, expanded like a running stream of sweet waters<\/em>. . . . . . many of the faint-hearted among them perished on their way. But most were saved.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet the pursuers, \u201cwhose heads and chests soared high above the water,\u201d chased them \u201cfor three lunar terms\u201d until finally reached by the rising waves, they perished to the last man, the soil sinking under their feet and the earth engulfing those who had desecrated her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2020 Some wonderful, artificially-made beast, similar in some way to Frankenstein\u2019s creation, which spoke and warned his master of every approaching danger. The master was a \u201cblack magician,\u201d the mechanical animal was informed by a djin<\/em>, an Elemental, according to the accounts. The blood of a pure man alone could destroy him.
