The new introduction, written by myself, has been posted separately at Academia.edu: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/14990642\/New_Introduction_to_Atman-Brahman_in_Ancient_Buddhism\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/<wbr \/>14990642\/New_Introduction_to_<wbr \/>Atman-Brahman_in_Ancient_<wbr \/>Buddhism<\/a>. It begins:<\/p>\n<p>The most serious objection to Kamaleswar Bhattacharya\u2019s thesis that the Buddha did not deny the universal <em>\u0101tman<\/em> may be put in the form of this question: Why, then, did Buddhists down through the ages think he did? Reply: Actually, they did not think this, as far as we can tell from their writings that refute the <em>\u0101<\/em><em>tman<\/em> and teach the <em>an\u0101tman<\/em> or no-self doctrine. The idea of the <em>\u0101tman<\/em> as the impersonal universal <em>\u0101tman<\/em> did not become dominant in India until some time after the eighth century C.E. Before then, throughout the Buddhist period, the dominant idea of the <em>\u0101tman<\/em> in India was that of a permanent personal <em>\u0101tman<\/em>. Judging from their writings, the Indian Buddhist teachers from N\u0101g\u0101rjuna to \u0100ryadeva to Asa\u1e45ga to Vasubandhu to Bhavya to Candrak\u012brti to Dharmak\u012brti to \u015a\u0101ntarak\u1e63ita thought that the Buddha\u2019s <em>an\u0101tman<\/em> teaching was directed against a permanent personal <em>\u0101tman<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A corrected reprint of Kamaleswar Bhattacharya&#8217;s book, The \u0100tman-Brahman in Ancient Buddhism, has now been issued with a new introduction.
